At Hope Christian Counselling, we understand that beginning counselling can feel like a big step. Below are answers to some of the most common questions people ask about Christian counselling, online counselling, and working with our team.
What is Christian Counselling?
Christian counselling integrates evidence-based psychological approaches with a Christian worldview. This means we provide professional counselling while also recognising the role that faith, meaning, and spirituality can play in healing and personal growth.
At Hope Christian Counselling, faith is never forced. You are welcome whether you are strong in your faith, questioning, or simply curious about how spirituality might relate to your wellbeing.
Do I need to be a Christian to attend counselling?
No. Many of our clients come from different faith backgrounds or no faith at all.
While our counsellors work from a Christian worldview, our approach is respectful and client-led. You are free to explore faith, doubt, spirituality, relationships, or personal struggles at your own pace.
What issues can Christian counselling help with?
Our Christian counsellors support people with a wide range of concerns, including:
-
Anxiety and stress
-
Trauma and past experiences
-
Depression and emotional overwhelm
-
Relationship and marriage challenges
-
Faith struggles or spiritual questions
-
Grief and loss
-
Life transitions and identity questions
Counselling provides a safe space to slow down, process what you’re experiencing, and move toward healing and clarity.
Do you offer online Christian counselling?
Yes. We provide online Christian counselling across Australia and Internationally (Excluding the US & Canada). Many people appreciate the flexibility of attending counselling from home or another quiet space. Sessions are conducted via secure video platforms, allowing you to access support wherever you live.
Do you offer in-person counselling?
Yes. We offer in-person counselling sessions in the Illawarra / Sydney region, as well as walk-and-talk counselling outdoors for those who prefer a more relaxed setting. This gives clients the option to choose the format that feels most comfortable and supportive.
What happens in the first counselling session?
Your first session is an opportunity to:
-
Share what has brought you to counselling
-
Talk about your goals or hopes for therapy
-
Ask questions about the counselling process
-
Begin building a safe and trusting relationship with your counsellor
There is no pressure to share everything straight away. Counselling moves at your pace.
How much does counselling cost?
Sessions at Hope Christian Counselling are typically $120 (Excl. GST) per 60-minute session.
We also offer a sliding scale in some circumstances for people experiencing financial hardship. Please contact our team if cost is a concern.
Are counselling sessions confidential?
Yes. Counselling sessions are private and confidential, with a few legal exceptions required by Australian law (such as risk of harm to yourself or others). Your counsellor will explain confidentiality and professional boundaries during your first appointment.
How long does counselling take?
The length of counselling varies depending on your needs.
Some people attend for a few sessions focused on a specific issue, while others benefit from longer-term support as they work through deeper patterns or life transitions. Your counsellor will work with you to create a pace that feels right.
Is Christian counselling evidence-based?
Yes. Our counsellors integrate evidence-based therapeutic approaches with Christian faith perspectives. This means we draw on recognised counselling methods while also respecting the role of spirituality, meaning, and values in a person’s life.
What is walk-and-talk counselling?
Walk-and-talk counselling takes place outdoors while walking side by side with your counsellor. Many people find that movement and being in nature helps them feel more relaxed and open in conversation. It can be particularly helpful for people who find traditional office settings uncomfortable.
How do I book a counselling session?
The best way to book a counselling session is to complete our online booking form. This helps us find the best fit for your needs.
Is Hope Christian Counselling a crisis service?
No. We are not a crisis counselling service and operate by appointment only.
If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or require immediate support, please contact emergency services or a crisis helpline such as Lifeline.
